Volunteers are Still the Heart of Open Hand.
Perhaps our greatest strength is the constant support of thousands of volunteers. At Open Hand, people from all walks of life come together to touch the lives of thousands of others who are not as fortunate. Our volunteers are generally surprised at how much fun they have in the process—due in part to our wonderful food service and distribution staff that, along with other remarkable volunteers, make them feel as though they are always among friends.
Open Hand volunteers package meals, drive meal delivery routes, work with our senior health and wellness programs, and serve in leadership positions. Without the dedication of each and every one of these incredible people, we simply could not do our very necessary work in our community.
We invite you—or a group from your place of business, your social group, your school or your place of worship—to volunteer with us. You’ll find that it’s a thoroughly unique and rewarding experience.

What is involved if you work in the kitchen?
Our kitchen, which was recently expanded and updated, is the Grand Central of Open Hand. As you would imagine, with over 4,500 meals to prepare, package and deliver every day, the atmosphere is electric. But it's not all work -- the music is always on, and the friendly banter among new friends never ceases. It all makes for a very memorable and rewarding experience.
Packing involves portioning food into individual containers and snack bags on our packing assembly line. This is a great project for individuals and families, and a great team-building exercise for school, business and church groups!
What if you'd prefer to deliver meals to clients?
Our drivers are a critical part of the service we provide to the community, since a majority of our clients are homebound. In fact, our volunteer driver is quite often the only person a client may see on any given day. But as much as that meal and that simple moment shared means to each client, it means just as much to each volunteer. We have some volunteers who have been driving a route for 10 years or more and others who drive every so often...but for every one of them, seeing a client smile is something very personal and rewarding.
When you drive, you will use your own vehicle, and we will provide you with extremely detailed driving directions. You will only deliver meals within the metro Atlanta area...and we can work with you to find a route that you are most comfortable with.
